This page is very much a work-in-progress and will be continually updated as time goes on.
A guideline for what characters and series are/aren’t allowed on MyWaifuList.
Despite being part of an approved series, characters must still have the ‘Minimum Required Information’ found here, in order to be accepted.
Allowed Characters
Characters must be human, human-like or a genre of monster girl in order to be accepted on MyWaifuList. We do not allow real people. Certain exceptions are made for series that have a primary mascot character as long as they have both speech capabilities and their own personality (ec. Kyubey or Luna). We do not allow creatures, animals, inanimate objects, or similar as a general rule at this time. Humanoid or anthropomorphized characters (ec. Azur Lane‘s ship girls or Girls’ Frontline‘s gun girls) are perfectly fine as long as their primary appearance is human. We do not allow fan-created characters, “OCs”, or other self-personas except for those that meet the guidelines found under Additional Guidelines and Rulings.
Allowed Series
Global Note: We do not allow live-action or otherwise true-to-life series based in the real world. Certain exceptions are made for video games with a realistic art style, as detailed in their respective sections below.
Japanese Media
Animation
All officially licensed Japanese animation is allowed unless otherwise specified under Denied Series. This includes OVA, ONA, Special, and TV series, along with Movies. Most series that have entries on any of the other large database websites (MAL, A-P, AniList) will subsequently also be allowed on MyWaifuList. Hentai series are currently acceptable in a general sense, but all individual characters must be marked as NSFW when submitting.
Video Games
Officially licensed Japanese video games are generally allowed, with significant preference given to anime-themed or inspired franchises. We will allow the vast majority of Japanese video games, especially 2D and animated franchises, but realistic-styled games may be subject to denial on a case-by-case basis.
Manga
All officially licensed Japanese manga are allowed unless otherwise specified under Denied Series. Most series that have entries on any of the other large database websites (MAL, A-P, AniList) will subsequently also be allowed on MyWaifuList. Doujinshi titles and non-licensed web-novels are generally allowed, but some may be subject to denial on a case-by-case basis. Most popular doujinshi titles that aren’t entirely unheard of will be allowed.
Novels
All officially licensed or produced Japanese light novels are allowed, unless otherwise specified under Denied Series. Most series that have entries on any of the other database websites (MAL, A-P, AniList) will subsequently also be allowed on MyWaifuList. Doujinshi titles and non-licensed web-novels are generally allowed, but some may be subject to approval on a case-by-case basis. Most popular doujinshi titles that aren’t entirely unheard of will be allowed.
Visual Novels
All officially licensed Japanese visual novels are allowed unless otherwise specified under Denied Series. Non-licensed web-novels are generally allowed, but some may be subject to denial on a case-by-case basis. Most popular doujinshi titles that aren’t entirely unheard of will be allowed.
Other Asian Media
Animation
All officially licensed Korean and Chinese animation is allowed unless otherwise specified under Denied Series. This includes OVA, ONA, Special, and TV series, along with Film. We currently aren’t accepting un-official series at this time (ec. doujinshi titles).
Manga, Webcomics, and Light Novels
Manga, webcomics, and light novels from Asian regions other than Japan are to be decided upon on a case-by-case basis. Generally speaking, the more popular a series, the more likely we are to accept it. Officially licensed media and webcomics that garner a significant audience on one or more of the major digital publishing platforms are more likely to be approved in these cases.
Western Media
Animation
As a standard rule, we don’t accept most Western animated series. Certain series may be accepted on a case-by-case basis, but will typically have to be at least anime-inspired. This can either be in visual style or can be inferred based on verbal or written comments made by series staff in interviews, etc.. Additional consideration will be given to borderline series that also have a large number of popular or socially relevant characters, in order to better determine if it warrants being added to the website. All series that we decide to allow will be listed under Approved Western Media, due to the fact that it likely won’t be a large list.
To clarify, both Western cartoons aimed at children and adult animated series will not be allowed as a general rule (ec. Gravity Falls, Phineas and Ferb, The Simpsons and BoJack Horseman, to name a few).
Video Games
As a standard rule, we don’t accept most Western video games. Certain series may be accepted on a case-by-case basis, but will generally have to be at least anime-inspired or have a large number of popular, relevant characters with available information in order to warrant their addition to the website. All series that we decide to allow will be listed under Approved Western Media, due to the fact that it likely won’t be a large list.
Manga and Webcomics
Western and English manga are not accepted on MyWaifuList at this time. Certain exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis for webcomic series that garner a significant audience on one or more of the major digital publishing platforms (ec. webtoons). All series that we decide to allow will be listed under Approved Western Media, due to the fact that it likely won’t be a large list.
Novels
Western novels are not accepted on MyWaifuList at this time.
Visual Novels
Only officially-licensed Western visual novels will be accepted on MyWaifuList at this time. Most western games backed and/or published by Sekai Project (ec. Heart of the Woods, Highway Blossoms) are allowed.
Additional Guidelines and Rulings
Existing Character and Series Entries
These rules and guidelines were originally created November 24, 2019. There are hundreds of series with thousands of characters added prior to this that may now fail to meet the standards we consider when determining an “Approved Series.” As such, existing entries should not be used to argue in favor of approval for an unrelated series. All approval requests will be looked at individually based on the current iteration of these guidelines.
Once we have undergone and completed our website cleanup (this has not concluded yet), it will be announced as such. At that point in time this specific guideline may be updated or removed entirely.
Disney Princesses
While their individual series are not allowed on MyWaifuList, Disney Princesses are, in fact, okay to submit but must be listed under our The Walt Disney Company root franchise entry. All characters who meet the qualifications to be considered a Disney Princess, as outlined here, are approved for MyWaifuList.
Other main characters (think protagonist/antagonist-level) may be approved on a case-by-case basis but must be from one of the series listed here to be considered. Minor characters will not be accepted.
Real People, Personas and Personal Mascot Characters
While we do not allow real people to be submitted on MyWaifuList, certain exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis for personas, personal mascot characters, or someone who has a legitimate anime appearance. Content creators or other internet influencers and communities with a large audience may be allowed to have their own character entry if they meet the following guideline:
They are a larger creator influencer, or online community with a long-standing, consistent mascot character that is frequently used to represent themselves (ec. Nyanners, AmaLee).
Exceptions to this rule will generally be submitted by either the person themselves or a website moderator, but if you are curious as to whether or not this applies in a specific case, please reach out to Staff or me in our Discord server.
